Central Asian modulation of Northern Hemisphere moisture transfer over the Late Cenozoic

چکیده
Abstract Earth’s climatic evolution over the last 5 million years is primarily understood from perspective of marine mechanisms, however, role terrestrial feedbacks remains largely unexplored. Here we reconstruct soil moisture variability in Central Asia using paleomagnetism data and isotope geochemistry an 80 m-thick sedimentary succession at Charyn Canyon, Kazakhstan. We identify a long-term trend increasing aridification throughout period, along with shorter-term related to interaction between mid-latitude westerlies Siberian high-pressure system. This record highlights contribution Eurasian systems modulation transfer into Northern Hemisphere oceans back onto land via westerly air flow. The response Earth-surface dynamics Plio-Pleistocene change likely generated affecting ocean atmospheric circulation. missing link elucidates significance land-water for global climate.

Late Cenozoic moisture history of East Africa.
Lake sediments in 10 Ethiopian, Kenyan, and Tanzanian rift basins suggest that there were three humid periods at 2.7 to 2.5 million years ago (Ma), 1.9 to 1.7 Ma, and 1.1 to 0.9 Ma, superimposed on the longer-term aridification of East Africa. These humid periods correlate with increased aridity in northwest and northeast Africa and with substantial global climate transitions. These episodes co...
متن کاملNorthern Hemisphere Glaciation during the Globally Warm Early Late Pliocene
The early Late Pliocene (3.6 to ∼3.0 million years ago) is the last extended interval in Earth's history when atmospheric CO2 concentrations were comparable to today's and global climate was warmer. Yet a severe global glaciation during marine isotope stage (MIS) M2 interrupted this phase of global warmth ∼3.30 million years ago, and is seen as a premature attempt of the climate system to estab...
متن کاملModulation of northern hemisphere wintertime stationary planetary wave activity: East Asian climate relationships by the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation
[1] The modulation of the relationship between the tropospheric stationary planetary wave activity and the East Asian winter climate by the tropical quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) wind in the stratosphere is investigated. In the QBO easterly phase, a significant warming appears in northeastern Asia in the presence of high wave activities. This corresponds to a weakened East Asian trough at 50...
متن کاملEmpirically derived climate predictability over the extratropical northern hemisphere
A novel application of a technique developed from chaos theory is used in describing seasonal to interannual climate predictability over the Northern Hemisphere (NH). The technique is based on an empirical forecast scheme-local approximation in a reconstructed phase space-for time-series data. Data are monthly 500 hPa heights on a latitude-longitude grid covering the NH from 20°N to the equator...
